The Mayo Clinic Diet is a diet book first published in 1949 by the Mayo Clinic’s Committee on Dietetics, originally titled the *Mayo Clinic Diet Manual*. Prior to this publication, the term "diet" was often associated with fad diets lacking clinical credibility.

The diet begins with a two-week phase in which five beneficial habits replace five harmful ones. According to the authors, this change can lead to a weight loss of 6 to 10 pounds (2.5 to 4.5 kilograms) over the two-week period. The remainder of the program emphasizes a combination of portion control and physical activity, allowing for a safe weight loss of 1 to 2 pounds per week.

The program utilizes a food pyramid that places vegetables and fruits at its base. Carbohydrates, meats, dairy, fats, and sweets are categorized into progressively smaller daily allowances. The diet emphasizes setting realistic goals, replacing unhealthy habits, and practicing conscious portion control. The medical manual laid the groundwork for public lifestyle books, eventually morphing into the widely recognized public weight-loss program that utilizes the "Healthy Weight Pyramid" and habit-building strategies

Five Bad Habits to Replace

2. Snacks that are not fruits or vegetables
3. Overly large servings of meat or dairy products

5. Watching television while eating
